As beautiful and heartwarming Valentines day is now its origins come from two pagan festivals in ancient times. Lupercalla and the feast of Juno Februata.
Lupercalla which is celebrated on February 15th and also known as the festival of sexual licence was the ancient Roman way of honouring Lupercus the god of fertility.
Roman male priests known and Luperci connected with ventral virgins to carry out purification rituals by sacrificing goats and dogs. Clothed in lion cloths made form sacrificed goats the Luperci thought that flogging women with thong skins made of the sacrificed goats purified women and brought about fertility. The word February derives from Februa which translates into 'means of purification'.
February was also the sacred time to Juno Februata the goddess of febris (fever) (love)) and of marriage and women. On the day of February 14th pieces of paper which each had the name of a young maiden were put ito a container. Young men would then draw a piece of paper and they would become a couple. After joining as a coulee o=they would remain sexual partners for the period of 1 year only.
This original ritual was taken by the church and in a word 'whitewashed' ad turned into a religious festival 'Feast of the Purification of the Virgin Mary.”
Church leaders wanted to do away with the original 'pagan'. festivals and Lupercalla was one of the ones they wanted to abolish but the Roman citizens had other ideas… I think they mush have liked flogging women into fertility..
Pope Gelasius was the one who changed the name in AD 496 to St Valentines day getting rid of the original 'pagan'. festival and replacing it with something more biblical.
So when sending your valentines wishes today please spare a thought for the flogged women of ancient Roman times and the way the church has manipulated ancient beliefs into modern day Christianity and how these Christian festivals have become commercial ventures and marketing opportunities.
This stuff fascinates me getting back to the roots and I am sure it would go back much further than AD 300.
However I would much rather receive a card and well wishes than a flogging but if anyone wants to reenact ritual flogging for valentines day I am happy to oblige but I am afraid it will be in the name of male fertility..
