Break the Rules

Hi Dungeonites how about this for a dungeon. I do not have such but if you bring your own spade we can try and make one in the garden.

During the Middle Ages, it was felt that the people needed to be afraid of the Civil authority and the Church. The only way to keep order was to make sure that the citizens were terrified of any punishment that would be given out if a person was found guilty of a crime. And so, with the use of corporal punishment penalties were harsh. Mine can be too!!

The inventiveness of the techniques and instruments used by the Medievals for both physical torture and punishment were remarkable. Prisoners, usually those from poorer backgrounds might be branded on the forehead, have feet, hands or even their tongues removed, ( Funny never been asked for these punishments). and then they would be sent out into the world to carry on their lives as best they could, while showing the rest of society how they too would suffer if they dared to break the rules.

But perhaps the most horrendous punishment meted out to supposed offenders centuries ago was confinement within the dreaded Oubliette, a dark and sinister type of prison. seems likely that the oubliettes were used to inspire terror in one’s enemies in this fractious political environment and it did. I do not like the look of it myself but I am sure that some of my friends would like to have a go don’t ask me to join you only made for one.

A good example is Warwick Castle in Warwickshire in the English Midlands. This castle was first built at the behest of William the Conqueror in 1068, and an oubliette was installed, one which was so narrow that the victim had to remain lying in a prone position, unable to stand up. Mmmm how much for an hour???

Mistress K: Anyone up for a spell in the dungeon!!! I am sure I can arrange it.
